At first sight, it is quite amazing that so many postcards can be collected relating to a man who died some 90 years before picture postcards were first introduced in Britain; but such was the comprehensive coverage achieved by postcards that historical events were - and continue to be - covered as enthusiastically as contemporary ones.

The author covers Nelson's life and career before looking at the legacy he left in statues, street names, towers and monuments dedicated to him. HMS Victory, a cathedral and shrine to Nelson, is well-featured, and a special section illustrates the souvenir postcards of the Trafalgar Centenary in 1905.

Picture postcards were the main means of personal communication a century ago, and publishers tapped into the prevailing patriotic mood with lots of cards issued for the occasion.
